COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – After South Carolina’s roadways were devastated by Hurricane Helene, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced they are sending emergency relief funds to assist with repairs.
USDOT’s Federal Highway Administration said they are providing $2 million to offset costs of immediate repairs as a result of flood damage.
The department said 12 counties in the Palmetto State suffered substantial damage to roadways, culverts and bridges. They also emphasized funding should be allocated to open and maintain access on US-276 in Greenville County, which they said was “strategically important for maintaining emergency communications and operations.”
“Hurricane Helene has taken the lives of our fellow Americans, and devastated homes and businesses — but the people of South Carolina are not in this alone,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “The Biden-Harris administration has been on the ground since the hurricane hit, we will be with South Carolina every step of the way as they recover and rebuild, and today’s emergency funding to help get transportation networks back up and running safely will be followed by additional federal resources.”
USDOT said Secretary Buttigieg has been in communication with Governor Henry McMaster and has visited FEMA headquarters to be briefed on Helene’s impacts.
