COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – The South Carolina Senate confirmed Justin P. Powell to serve as the next Secretary of Transportation on Tuesday, according to a release from the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT).
Powell was appointed to serve in this role in January 2024 when the Senate Transportation Committee unanimously voted to send a favorable report regarding his appointment to the full Senate.
Powell was the Chief Operating Officer for SCDOT, managing operations for its $5 billion construction program and state highway system. He has also served as Deputy Secretary for Finance and Administration and Chief of Staff for the Secretary of Transportation, meaning Powell was a senior advisor who led initiatives on the Secretary’s behalf.
“I appreciate the trust and confidence of the South Carolina Senate in my ability to lead this organization,” Powell said. “It is an honor to serve and to me there is no higher calling than to serve the people of South Carolina.”
Powell is succeeding former Secretary of Transportation Christy Hall, who retired in March 2024. He is the 17th agency head for SCDOT.
