CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – The state Department of Transportation and Charleston County will host a public meeting highlighting a Dorchester Road safety project.
Officials are hoping to reduce the number and severity of crashes for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists after an audit showed alarming rates for an eight-mile section of the busy road. From 2018 to 2022, 3,243 crashes were reported there.
The department wants to focus on safety improvements for a 4.7-mile corridor from Michaux Parkway to Kent Avenue, near Interstate 26.
It was selected for study under the Federal Highway Safety Improvement program, which uses data and strategies to identify areas with high crash patterns or rates and provide effective countermeasures.
The aim is to have the final designs completed by the summer of 2025 and start construction in 2026. It would take around 18 months to complete.
If you are interested in learning more, the meeting will be held at Jerry Zucker Middle School from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 26. The meeting will be drop-in style with no formal presentation.
