MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Merrimac Ferry is closed for the winter season, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation said Friday.
Due to cold weather effecting river conditions, ferry service was stopped on Nov. 29. While there have been warmer periods in December, the river has not been deemed warm enough to run the ferry again.
The ferry connects Okee in Columbia County and Merrimac in Sauk County, bringing traffic across the Wisconsin River.
In the 2024 season, the ferry crossed the river 34,471 times, carrying 182,904 vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians, according to the DOT.
During the off season, workers will conduct maintenance and repairs on the ferry for the spring 2025 reopening.
