Movie theaters: Open both days.
Drug stores: Open both days with varying hours.
Coffee Shops: Open both days with varying hours.
Banks: Open New Year’s Eve. Closed New Year’s Day.
Stock market: Open New Year’s Eve. Closed New Year’s Day.
Municipal, state, federal offices: Open New Year’s Eve. Closed New Year’s Day.
Libraries: Open New Year’s Eve with varying hours. Closed New Year’s Day.
Schools: Closed both days.
Mail: Post offices open on New Year’s Eve. Closed on New Year’s Day.
MBTA: Subways, buses, commuter rail, the RIDE, and ferry routes will operate on regular weekday schedule on New Year’s Eve. Subway service will increase after 3 p.m. and will be extended by one hour.

Starting at 8 p.m. on Dec. 31, subway, bus, ferry, and The RIDE will be fare-free. Commuter Rail service will be free on trains that arrive or depart North/South Station from 8 p.m. through end of service.
On New Year’s Day, subways, buses and the RIDE will operate on a Sunday schedule. Commuter rail will operate on a weekend schedule. There will be no ferry service. For more information, visit https://www.mbta.com/holidays.
